  House committee approves magna carta for Filipino seafarers

  MANILA - The House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs on Thursday approved a measure that would ensure the rights and welfare of Filipino seafarers. The Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers would ensure the protection of seafarers through "proper work conditions, just terms of employment, and sufficient career opportunities", the committee said in a statement. Aside from approving the said measure, the committee also discussed updates on the incident involving Gulf Livestock 1, a cargo vessel that capsized off the waters of Japan with 39 Filipino seafarers onboard.

  “Hero at sea” wins Still At Sea photography competition

  We’re really pleased to announced the winners of the Still At Sea photography competition, which invited seafarers to submit digital photos of their lives at sea during the pandemic. The competition received an incredible response; with almost 3,000 photographs submitted. The photos showed the huge variety of experiences of seafarers at sea during the pandemic, from personal portraits and day to day life, to extreme weather and deserted cruise ships.

  Containership collides with Greek minesweeper, cuts it in half

  On October 27, the container ship Maersk Launceston collided with the Hellenic Navy minesweeper Kallisto off Piraeus. The minesweeper was damaged significanlty, while two crewmembers were injured.

  Japanese car ship arrested in Melbourne over crew change

  International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) officials have been involved in stopping a Japanese-owned car import vessel from slipping through Australian authorities’ fingers in the Port of Melbourne. The ship had brought vehicles to Australia earlier this week, including the Great Wall, Hyundai, Kia and Subaru brands A number of seafarers on the Panamanian-flagged MV ‘Metis Leader’ had been working aboard the vessel in excess of the 11 months maximum permitted under the Maritime Labour Convention and vessels flagged to Panama, as well as the 14 months limit allowed by Australian authorities.
